Join Jason Snell on June 10 at 7 p.m. at CSPS in Cedar Rapids for "Concentric: Transcultural Resonance in Sound Practices," a free public event exploring how cultures use sound to guide consciousness. The evening includes a research-based presentation highlighting Meskwaki, Christian, Vedic, Asian and rave sound practices, followed by an immersive biofeedback sound performance in the CSPS Black Box Theater. He'll be joined by Cece Zhang from New York University. This project is supported by the Iowa Arts Council's Art Project Grant.
Emerging from the 1990s rave scene in Cedar Rapids, Jason Snell has spent three decades as an electronic music producer, meditator, and computer programmer. He combines these disciplines to create sound performances using brainwave and heartbeat sensors, exploring themes of vulnerability, entertainment, and synchrony. His work has been presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Hirshhorn, festivals and galleries in Berlin, Dubai, and Shanghai, and at universities including MIT, NYU, Brown, Imperial College London, the University of Europe in Berlin, and the University of Iowa. Several of his projects have been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Iowa Arts Council, Iowa City Public Arts, and the Iowa City Downtown District. His first public art performance took place at “Out of Bounds” at CSPS in 1993.
