Nick Gadbois was born in Iowa and grew up in the Midwest around
Minneapolis. His father was a commercial illustrator who introduced him to the art of the Surrealists. He has shown on the national level in San Diego, Portland, Seattle, Santa Fe, Minneapolis and Kansas City. In addition to painting, he has completed two large public art projects, one at the Tri Cities Cancer in Kennewick Washington, and the other at the University of New Mexico in Los Alamos. His artwork is in numerous public and private collections in the United States. His paintings are represented by Arts KC in Missouri and SNW Gallery and Reuben Saunders Gallery in Kansas. He draws inspiration from unusual roadside attractions, Route 66 themes, and oddities in the American heartland. The artist lives and works in Ottawa, Kansas.
"My Oddity series calls attention to the strange and quirky sights in mid America. Combining landscape with the world of roadside attractions, my work promotes what I call 'everyday surrealism'. I do not invent imaginary scenes in the mind but paint subjects from real life that already appear surreal. There is a narrative aspect to my art, stories that accompany the images being presented. My paintings have something in common with the American artists Thomas Hart Benton and Charles Burchfield. Both artists stretched the limits of realism in their depictions of life and spirit in the heartland."
