Founded in 1992 by 30 dedicated citizens, the GLRC of Cedar Rapids was created to provide books, films, information, and a safe gathering space for the local GLB community. Operated through rented spaces maintained by volunteers, the organization offered social events, support resources, a community phone line, newsletters, and listings of GLB-friendly businesses and nonprofits. Fundraisers such as annual picnics and flag football tournaments helped sustain the center and its programming. In 1995, the group expanded its mission by organizing Cedar Rapids’ first Gay Pride Day, joining the growing national Pride movement.
As internet access grew and maintaining a physical center became increasingly difficult, the GLRC closed its resource space in the early 2000s, though Pride celebrations continued. After leadership changes and a brief rebranding as CR UNITY, the organization returned to the name GLRC of Cedar Rapids DBA as CR Pride. The nonprofit regained its 501(c)(3) status in 2014 and continued expanding Pride events, moving venues as needed and increasing community visibility. By 2019, CR Pride attendance reached an estimated 9,000 people, growing to approximately 14,000 attendees in 2022 after virtual celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through 2025, the CR Pride Festival continues to be held at NewBo City Market in downtown Cedar Rapids.
