Join us for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) — a cultural tradition that brings communities together to honor the lives of loved ones who have passed. Día de los Muertos is a joyful time filled with music, dance, food, and storytelling. Families create ofrendas (altars) decorated with marigolds, candles, sugar skulls (calaveras), photos, and favorite foods to welcome back the spirits of departed loved ones for a brief, symbolic reunion. Attendees will hear traditional Mexican/Latino music and observe an artistic dance performance by Cedars Rapids' very own Fuerzas Culturales, who will showcase traditional Mexican dances and vibrant outfits. There will be a Community Ofrenda (altar) and everyone is invited to bring a photo or small item in honor of someone they wish to remember. This event will be more than a show - it will be a chance to come together, learn something new, and honor life and memory as a community.
Fuerzas Culturales is a community-based organization that provides dance classes and performance opportunities to local children and teens at no cost. The organization’s instructors teach participants traditional Mexican folk dancing in preparation for public performances. Fuerzas Culturales, which translates to “Cultural Forces,” strives to preserve and maintain Latino culture in the youth through traditional dance. It strives to spark cultural pride in the participant and the community at large.
