My lifelong passion for rock and roll began in 1964 with the Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Influenced early on by my older siblings, I was introduced to artists such as the Mamas and the Papas, the Doors, and Janis Joplin. I began building a sizable collection of 45 RPM records and LPs, immersing myself in the free-form progressive rock radio that defined the era.
I attended the University of Iowa, where I majored in Communications Studies and discovered a particular interest in film production. During that time, I produced a Wayne’s World-style public access television show that highlighted local musicians performing in the Iowa City bar scene.
After graduating, I moved to Cedar Rapids and spent fifteen years writing and producing corporate video content for an industrial manufacturing company. Although I transitioned into a different career in the 2000s, my dedication to live music never waned, and I continued to attend concerts whenever possible.
Having experienced live performances for more than half a century, I remain captivated by the raw energy of the stage. For me, live music is not just a pastime it is the enduring soundtrack to the most meaningful moments of my life.
For the past fifteen years, Greg has documented live performances by many legendary musicians across rock, jazz, and blues. Greg’s work is driven by a deliberate search for the defining moment in each performance—the instant that captures the energy, emotion, and presence of the artist and lingers in long-term memory. From the Allman Brothers to ZZ Top, this exhibit presents a selection of images created over that time, each preserving a fleeting moment from the stage.
