Artist Bio

If I’m doing it right, painting feels as if I’m entirely “in the moment,” the same feeling you get when, say, you’re surfing a big wave or snowboarding, so intense that there’s no normal thought process, just a complete “oneness” … the moment stretches out into infinity. KKrrr-ack! Sudden beauty! Making art can be the same feeling. No words unless it’s inarticulate like “yeah, yeah, YEAH! That’s IT!” I’ve felt it when just looking at art. And making art.

I’m always trying to figure out what to say about my work. I guess what it boils down to is: I paint because I have to; I’d go crazy if I didn’t. The art says what it says for itself, as I think all art does, and anything I try to add after that is just distraction. Even the titles (maybe even especially the titles.) So don’t let the titles mislead you.

Let your spirit be opened…release your ghosts.

Exhibit Narrative

Don’t we all have a few ghosts we ought to release? Set ‘em free, I say! It’s a good time for that! Now that I think about it, I’m guessing that’s a good description of what I’m doing when I really get into painting, you know, when one reaches a state of mind in the process where you’re trancelike…releasing your problems…regrets…ghosts. I’m trying to tap into a realm that some think we all share as human beings. That’s good, because my intent is to touch on universals; things that connect us all, and that people seem to recognize even when there’s nothing clearly recognizable in the painting.

Often I feel we humans communicate on an entirely sub-rosa, non-vocalized level, mostly without knowing it. If we’re sharing some intense common activity, it’s easier to feel. We don’t have to speak these feelings, but we look at each other, and we know - they’re an open secret.
