I've told so many skies about you

matt pulford - main Gallery

Opening Reception: Friday, April 3 @ 5:30 PM

Artist Bio

Matt Pulford is a mid-career Iowa artist working in the realms of painting, drawing, printmaking, installation, and photography. He has an immense love of the calming seclusion of the quiet outdoors, but- in contrast - also deeply enjoys fast, angry, heavy, protest music, and both of these modalities inform his art-making. Matt has shown regionally in galleries and museums throughout Illinois and Iowa; nationally in cities such as Seattle and Denver; and in Canadian art galleries in Edmonton, Alberta, and Regina, Saskatchewan.

"There is not a more dominant inspiration behind my work than the open, expansive landscape. I long for escapes from our modern, cluttered everyday, seeking wide-open areas where I immerse myself within the sensory stimuli of natural light, sound, and other such ephemera. My yearning for these experiences manifests itself in dissimilar yet intertwining styles of work. There are whimsical abstractions where elements such as quilts and trees fly through the sky, and there are darker narratives touching on ritual, lore, and death." - Matt Pulford

Exhibit Narrative

I’ve Told So Many Skies About You is an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and mixed-media pieces by Iowa artist Matt Pulford. Most of the work in this show was influenced by Matt’s time working in seclusion at a rural Nebraska artist residency during the summers of 2024 and 2025.

During this time, Matt became enthralled with the land, sky, and even the air itself, studied from vantage points from as high as above the trees, to as low as laying down in the shallows of the Platte River. Visitors to the exhibition will see meditative studies of grasses blowing in the wind, reflections on the constant choir of birds and insects, and investigations of distance and loss—made clear while spending time alone, far from home.
