About the Artist:
As a portrait artist, Lara has always been an observer of people, noticing not only the color of reflected light on skin, but the reflection of experiences and personality in a person’s eyes and facial expressions. In her realistic portraits that are touched with imaginative details, she is driven to draw the viewer in and inspire them to want to know the subject of the portrait, to question what the subjects are thinking as they look out of the page or canvas.
While Lara’s primary medium has been graphite, she has always felt like art is a journey of learning and exploration, so is continually experimenting with other mediums, techniques, and even subject matter. Having studied for two semesters at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas, she gained a footing in the basics of drawing, composition, and color to continue as a self-taught artist through extensive study and mentorship in online art communities.
Lara has sold many works through commissions and having recently relocated from Colorado, is excited to continue to do so here in Iowa.
From the Artist on "People, Places, and Things":
A collection of graphite works on paper reflecting the artist's abiding interest in people, creating a visual narrative about the inner person we all have, regardless of our public face.
These images also reflect the explorations of an artist who is always in the process of experimenting to better convey her subject matter. Along with these drawings are a group of explorations in color and texture in oil and soft pastel.
Overall, this body of work is an invitation for the viewer to experience that there is beauty all around us if we make the effort to look outside of ourselves to see it.
