Exhibit Dates: July 8 - 30

ARTIST BIO

I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Washington SHS in 1970. I then moved to the Bay Area to study painting at California College of Arts and Crafts where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I then earned my Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

After graduating I taught painting and drawing at Mount Senario College, a small private school that had a diverse student population including a large population of Native American students and Japanese students studying in the ESL program. I then went on to teach painting and drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for 24 years.

EXHIBIT NARRATIVE

When I start a painting, I do not have a clear objective or direction. I'm neither a designer nor an illustrator seeking stories or technical mastery.  I do not believe art is a language, but I do believe it can transform emotions and ignite our imaginations. I am focused on what is inconsistent and passive, not definitions. And I like the boundless and indefinite space that I can occupy in a painting.

My approach to painting involves treating the process as a puzzle, methodically arranging and rearranging disparate elements of reality to achieve a cohesive relationship between memory and imagination.
